What’s the difference between a cushion and a pillow?

You don’t know whether you’re looking for a cushion or a pillow? Although they’re similar, the two don’t have the same function. Find out the difference in this article!

Cushion or pillow. For which use?

Cushion? Pillow? Aren’t they the same thing? Well, no, quite simply because they don’t have the same function. While cushions are more for support (under your back on a sofa) or for decoration, such as on your armchair, chair or bed, pillows are designed for sleeping.  Pillows are designed to support your neck and keep your spine straight when you sleep.

Do they have the same dimensions?

Pillows come in a wide range of sizes, so you can find one that suits your preferences. However, there are some standard sizes that you’ll usually find in bedding stores:

  • 65 x 65 cm – standard European square format
  • 50 x 70 or 50 x 75 cm – standard European rectangular format
  • 60 x 70 cm – standard Dutch size
  • 40 x 60 cm – standard size for flat pillows for sleeping on the stomach, or many small ergonomic pillows
  • 50 x 60 cm – standard Scandinavian size or some ergonomic pillows
  • 80 x 80 cm – standard German square format
  • 40 x 80 cm – standard German rectangular size
  • 50 x 90 cm – standard Spanish rectangular size
  • 30 x 50 cm – standard size for babies

Cushions, on the other hand, come in an infinite number of sizes and shapes, and are less standardised. So, by default, we can say that there are no standard pillowcases that fit cushions, because cushions are not designed for sleeping.

How do I choose my cushion or pillow?

For cushions, we advise you to consult decorating specialists who will be able to advise you on the best choice depending on where you want to put them.

For pillows, the size will depend on your personal preferences, but the choice will also depend on the position in which you sleep – we’ve dedicated an article to this subject.

We advise you to pay particular attention to the composition of your bedding, and recommend that you choose natural down and feather bedding, for better quality, healthier sleep and products that last as long as possible.

Can you sleep with a cushion? Yes, but it’s not recommended and will be less comfortable than a pillow, which will really support your spine and prevent back and neck problems.
